Goals for Inventuate

I’m not sure if any of the things I want to see happen with this site will happen.  Despite whatever amount of work or imagination I put into it, who knows how many people, if any, will read it, and then whether any of them (you) will find it interesting at all.  So right now I will quickly outline what I plan to do here so that I, and possibly some of you, can see whether I actually follow through over the next weeks and months.  I will also include what kind of response I would hope that evokes from the internet using/blog reading public and then I/ we can see whether that comes to be as well. Originally I wanted to use this space to publish a story that is radidly becoming a novella, and that is still my primary intention.  Two of the story’s major characters are inventors, and a major part of the story revolves around the genesis, creation and development of a few of these guys’ inventions.  While writing is my primary interest, I am doing a modest level of research into what is necessary to develop some these invention ideas, and then bring them to market.  The blogging format seems a good start, since I can add photos or other graphics, plus links to lots of related information about the inventions or their components as I learn about them, that will enhance the story, and perhaps become a part of it.

As I learned a little more about blogs, and their counterparts in fiction known by some as flogs, I decided that just throwing up a story on line without commentary from its author might diminish the story’s odds for a large readership.  So another goal here, besides publishing an exciting, evolving story, and arranging links to lots of relevant information around it, is to clarify and publish my thoughts on fiction in general and its future in this time starved, over entertained and increasingly technical/fact oriented culture.

I would like to see people commenting on the inventions and expressing whether or not they would use them.  And why.  I would like to start a serious of forums about consumer culture, about the things we need versus the things we want.  And I would like to renew interest in didactic literature, where people’s interest in story directs their inquiry into new subjects, and a renaissance in respect for reading fiction occurs as people learn that it is both entertaining and useful.
